James Jerome Shiels Obituary

January 26, 1926 – May 16, 2009

Shiels, James Jerome , age 83, a longtime Walpole resident, died on Saturday evening, May 16, 2009, at Caritas Norwood Hospital.

Born in Medfield on January 26, 1926, he was a son of the late Jerome and Jessica I. (McFadden) Shiels. He graduated from Medfield High School in 1943 and shortly thereafter entered the U.S. Army. As a member of the Armored 19th Infantry Battalion, Jim saw combat in Central Europe and the Rhineland and was awarded two Bronze Stars, the Purple Heart, and the combat infantry badge.

Jim was employed as a meat cutter with Stop & Shop in Dedham for more than 25 years at the time of his retirement. He was a member of the Walpole Knights of Columbus Council #1319, the Medfield American Legion Beckwith Post #110 and the Walpole V.F.W. Post #1588.

He is survived by his wife, Grace C. (Evans) Shiels, a son, James J. Shiels, Jr. of Franklin, a daughter, Claire T. O’Keefe and husband Kevin of Norfolk, a sister, Margaret B. Newton of Medway, a brother, Peter J. Shiels of Medfield, and three grandchildren, James J. Shiels, III, and Gavin E. and Audrey G. O’Keefe. He was also a brother of the late Mary E. Whitney and Leo G. Shiels.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Church, 10 Diamond Street, Walpole, on Friday, May 22nd, at 10:00a.m. Burial with military honors will follow at Vine Lake Cemetery, Medfield.

Visiting hours will be held at the Roberts-Mitchell Funeral Home, 15 Miller Street, Medfield, Thursday 4 – 8p.m.
