Lou Calnek, March 7, 1922-May 3, 2008, was the son of Hermann and Beatrice Calnek. He is survived by his wife, May (Edgecomb) Calnek, daughter Lotte Calnek, grandson Bennett Sterling, all of Manchester, and sister Patricia McLeod, Brooksby Village, MA.

Lou graduated from Manchester’s Story High School in 1940, served in WWII in the Army Air Corps, South Pacific, educated at Massachusetts College of Art; and Pratt Institute, B.A. He and May spent 48 years in Manhattan and Croton-on-Hudson, New York, before returning to Manchester to be with their daughter and grandson. They would have celebrated their 60th anniversary in August.

Lou enjoyed a long, rewarding career as an illustrator, cartoonist, graphic artist in advertising and publishing. He had a keen wit and a wonderful sense of humor.

Lou’s greatest loves were his family, cartooning, watercolor painting, playing hockey, reading, tennis and bicycling.

A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday May 18th at the Legion Hall, Manchester, located behind Town Hall, from 3:30-5:00pm. Memorial donations may be sent to Hospice of The North Shore, 10 Elm Street, Danvers, MA 01923. Arrangements by the Campbell – Lee, Moody, Russell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot St., Beverly.
