Hamilton - Mrs. Kathryn “Kay” (Lundegren) Duryea, age 75 years, wife of William “Bill” Duryea II, died January 4, 2007 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. Born in Jackson Heights, New York, daughter of the late Walter and Mary (Patterson) Lundegren, she grew up in Marblehead, MA and was a 1949 graduate of Marblehead High School.

As an undergraduate, she attended Tufts University. She then took time off from her educational pursuits to get married and raise three children. In 1975 she graduated summa cum laude from Northeastern University. Kay earned a masters degree in education from Tufts University in 1978.

Kay was married in 1951 to William DeWitt Duryea II, then an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps, at St. Michael’s Church in Marblehead. Kay and Bill lived in Camp Lajeune, NC and Pensacola, FL before settling in Hamilton, MA in 1954. Kay was a Hamilton resident for 52 years. She was a founding board member and former president of the Hamilton-Wenham League of Women Voters. Kay served on the vestry at Christ Church in Hamilton, where she was director of the thrift shop for 10 years, a Sunday school teacher and a member of the church for 52 years.

Kay had been employed as a school psychologist for the Joshua Eaton Elementary School in Reading for 16 years. After retirement, she was a volunteer with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, the Head Start Program, and the Hamilton-Wenham Public Schools.

In addition to her husband with whom she shared over 55 years of marriage, she is survived by one son, William D. Duryea III and his wife Brenda (Nalley) of Beverly; two daughters, Sandra T. Duryea of Hamilton, Linda P. Duryea and her husband Russell O’Brien of Wenham; six grandchildren, Will Duryea, Kelsey Duryea, James White, Jeff White, Natalie White and Harrison O’Brien; three sisters, Jane Bradford of Boston, Judy Sands and her husband Ben of North Reading and Betty Thorgilsson of Marblehead and many nieces and nephews.

Kay was an accomplished sportswoman who enjoyed golf, tennis, paddle tennis and skiing. She was an avid reader and loved to garden. Kay’s greatest enjoyment was spending time with her family and especially with her grandchildren.

A memorial service to celebrate Kay’s life will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Beverly Farms on Saturday January 27th at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. There are no visiting hours. Arrangements by the Campbell Funeral Home, 525 Cabot Street, Beverly.
