Leo Christie Winfield, Maryland Obituary

Leo Christie

Leo Joseph Christie, Jr., age 93, recently of Denver Colorado, previously of Randallstown, Maryland, passed peacefully on Saturday, July 30, 2016 at the Denver Hospice in Denver, Colorado. He was born in 1922 in Ottawa Canada to the late Leo J. Christie, Sr. and the late Rose Theresa Christie, nee O’Hara. Beloved husband of the late Anastasia (Stasia) Christie, nee Kelly, Beloved father of daughter Anastasia (Stacey) Christie Keller, (Kyle Aaron Smith), and son, David Leo Christie (Mary Christie), and grandchildren Matthew Joseph Keller, Kathryn Anastasia Keller, Stacey Christie and David Christie, as well as one great granddaughter, Olivia. Surviving are sister Madeline Christie Ennis, brothers-in-law Louis Ennis and Joseph DiCrispino, sisters-in-law Nancy Kelly and Rita Lafleur, and many loving nieces and nephews. His sister, Patricia Christie DiCrispino, and in-laws, Brendan Kelly, Patricia and Russell Davies, and Irene and Gordon Lafleur predeceased him. Leo was most proud of his service in the US Navy from 1942 to 1946 on the aircraft carrier, USS Wasp, where he became a plank owner upon its decommissioning. His service earned him multiple medals and ribbons including the Pacific Theatre (8 stars), American Theatre, the Philippine Liberation (two stars), Good Conduct and the Victory Medal. He earned 6 battle stars. Upon his return to the United States, he worked as a Groundskeeper at the Baltimore Country Club for 25 years, where his grooming of the grass tennis courts was respected widely. He then became as the Assistant Plant Manager at the Levindale Nursing home for another 20 years. Family was important to him, and Leo maintained close ties with relatives in Canada, Baltimore and Boston, and maintained friendships developed in grade school. He was active in the Catholic War Veterans, regularly attended reunions of the WASP aircraft carrier, and was a member of Holy Family Church. Throughout his life, he supported the endeavors of his daughter and son, the issues faced by veterans, and caring for others. After his retirement he enjoyed visits to the ocean, cruises with family and friends, and travel with his wife, Stasia until her Alzheimer’s limited their journeys. His undying devotion to Stasia knew no bounds. In early 2015 Leo left his home of over 50 years in Baltimore, and moved to Denver to an assisted living residence, near his daughter. At his new home, he was known as the vet who participated in everything, had a sense of humor and a love of candy, which he showed by passing out Wintergreen Lifesavers to all those who cared for him. He continued to reach out to family, enjoying calls, photos and visits. Friends and family may call at the Burrier-Queen Funeral Home & Crematory, PA, 1212 W. Old Liberty Road, Sykesville, MD 21784 (Beside South Carroll High School) on Thursday, August 11, 2016 from 6-9PM.
