Farmington – Madeline W. Howes Barnes, 90, a former resident of Hallowell, passed away, Monday morning, July 25th at Pinewood Terrace in Farmington, where she had resided for the past year. She was born September 19, 1925 in Jay, the daughter of Wilfred and Carrie (Harlow) Howes. Madeline was a graduate of Jay High School, and furthered her education in the nursing field. She received her RN, through Maine General Hospital in Portland, received her BS through University of Southern Maine and her MA at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Madeline served as a Cadet Nurse during WWII. She later began her nursing and teaching career primarily in the Augusta area, she was the public health nurse and school nurse for the City of Augusta for 6 years, and also developed and instructed the Health Occupation Program at Capital Area Vocational Center for 13 years. Madeline made her home in Hallowell to be close to her daughters. She is survived by her 3 daughters, Sherryl Kempton of New Sharon, Deborah Carey of Readfield and Rhonda Adlam of Belgrade; 6 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, brothers, Lt. Col. Ret. Rodney Howes of Texas and Dr. Carroll Howes of Canton, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, an infant brother, Bobby Howes and her sister, Gloria Luciano.
