Charleen J. Gilbert

Jay – Charleen J. Gilbert, 85, a resident of Jay, died peacefully, Saturday morning, June 18th at the home of her daughter, Cynthia Reeve and her husband Wayde, where she had been living for the past year and a half. She was born October 18, 1930 in Livermore Falls, the daughter of Lillian Davis. She was a 1949 graduate of Livermore Falls High School. Charleen was a devout Catholic having converted prior to her marriage to Gerard. They received special permission from the church to be married during Lent due to the war. Gerard had a 3 day leave to come home and they were married on March 15, 1951 at St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay. She worked at Livermore Shoe and later as a cook and housekeeper for St. Rose of Lima Church until her retirement. Charleen was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church, and a Charter Member of the Ladies Auxiliary at the Frank L. Mitchell V.F.W. Post 3335 in Jay. She and Gerard made their home and raised their family on Main Street in Chisholm. Charleen loved traveling to Reno with Gerard to visit their son Bill and his wife Trisha and family and friends. They also enjoyed trips with Moe and Madolyn Frechette, including a special trip to New Orleans. She was a wonderful cook, she was known for her pastries, pie crust, and “tortiere” meat pies. She loved knitting, sewing, and crocheting, and was very particular about her details in her crafts. Charleen also enjoyed making an afghan for every special occasion. Above all else, was the love of her family. Her family meant everything to her and she loved having them around her at all times. She is survived by daughter, Cynthia Reeve and her husband, Wayde of Jay; three sons, William Gilbert and his wife Patricia of Reno, Nevada; Jeffrey Gilbert and his wife Karen of Jay; and Thomas Gilbert and his wife Celine of New Gloucester; 11 grandchildren; Carl Badeau and his wife Lacy, Craig Badeau and wife Morgan, Jessica Skidmore, Jillian Gilbert, Joel Gilbert and his wife Melissa, Janna Gilbert, Jonathan Gilbert, Marc Gilbert and his wife Ellen, Stephen Gilbert and wife Victoria, Philip Gilbert and Hannah Gilbert, six great-grandchildren, Seth & Jenna Badeau, Noah, Evelyn, Elijah and Julia Gilbert. Her brother Kenneth Davis and wife Janet of Fayette; in-laws, Paul and Jean Gilbert, Sally and John Beaudoin and Anita Gilbert, her nieces; Rhonda, Pamela, Debra, Olivia, Kathy, Joline, Sarah, Rebecca and Alice, and her nephews; Robert, Eugene, Christopher, Matthew and David. She was predeceased by her husband Gerard Gilbert, sons, Peter and John Gilbert, and brothers-in-laws, Albert, James and Pierre Gilbert, Jr. The family would like to thank the ladies that helped her daily to keep her safe and comfortable on her final journey, especially, Sally Beaudoin, Karen Gilbert, Monica Brewer and most recently, Androscoggin Home Hospice.
