Mary "Marge" Spalding

Spalding, Mary Margaret "Marge" (Karrer), 90, of Louisville, passed away Tuesday, July 19, 2016. Over the years, she had been a member of St. Therese, St. Raphael and, eventually, St. Agnes Catholic Churches. She graduated from St. Therese Elementary in 1939, from Ursuline Academy H.S. in 1943, and in 1947 earned her B.S. from Ursuline College, magna cum laude, also earning a certificate from the Am. Soc. of Clinical Pathologists, and then began a career as a Medical Technologist. In later years she also worked in a research lab at the University of Louisville, studying methods for controlling oil spills at sea. She was a lifelong staunch Democrat, looking forward to helping to elect Hilary Clinton. Preceding her in death were her husband, Gabriel Cooper Spalding, Sr.; parents, Edward and Rose Canova Karrer; and brothers, EJ Karrer, Bob Karrer, Ed Karrer, and Herman Karrer. Survivors include her daughter Becky Spalding; son Gabe Spalding (Brenda Wernick); sisters, Emma Catherine "Kate" Karrer and Antoinette "Toni" Wiesemann; grandsons, Cooper Spalding and Dalton Spalding; along with a large extended family. The family would like to thank Linda & Mark Mulloy, Robbie Sims, Sandy Cummings, Sharon Twyman, Sheila Linton, Judy Seidt, and Carolyn Pape for helping Mother remain independent until the end. Her funeral Mass will be at 10:00 am, Saturday July 23, St. Agnes Catholic Church, 1920 Newburg Rd., with private burial at Resthaven Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 3-8 pm Friday at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Rd. Expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Agnes Catholic Church or The Salvation Army.
