Donald Schuler

SCHULER, Donald Anthony (“Don”), Sr., 79, passed away Saturday afternoon, July 9, 2016, at Norton Brownsboro, with his family at his bedside. He was born on November 20, 1936 and was a life-long resident of Louisville. Don graduated in 1954 from St Xavier. He worked his whole 35-year career for the Southern Optical Company working his way up from intern while in high school to manager, vice-president, and board member, ultimately retiring in 1989 for health reasons. Don was a leader in his community, serving as mayor of Woodlawn Park from 1972 to 1988, and was an active member of the Louisville Jaycees, serving as vice-president. He also served as president and Executive Director of the Southeastern Society of Dispensing Opticians. He was made a life-time member of their Board of Directors. While he suffered immeasurably from rheumatoid arthritis and chronic heart failure, he never lost his faith in God or his sense of humor. He is preceded in death by his parents, Chester, Sr. and Lillian Kleber Schuler; his older brother, Chester Schuler, Jr.; and his daughter Denise Schuler Becker. Don is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 59 years, Ann Klapheke Schuler; his sons Donald Schuler, Jr. (Martha) of Louisville, and Michael Schuler (Helen) of Neshanic Station, NJ; son-in-law Steve Becker of Louisville; and his sisters Marilyn Schuler of Stevensville, MD, and Rita Schuler Mudd (Patrick) of Apple Valley, MN. He is also survived by his grandchildren of whom he was so proud: Brittany (Nate), Ryan, Amy, Michelle, Allison, Christina, and Joseph. They will dearly miss their “Grandad”. A funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 15, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 3345 Lexington Road, at 10:00 AM with burial to follow in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 PM on Thursday at Highlands Funeral Home, 3331 Taylorsville Road. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the St Vincent de Paul Society, 1015-C South Preston Street, Louisville, KY 40203 , or Little Sisters of the Poor,15 Audubon Plaza Drive, Louisville, KY 40217-1318.
