There will be a Catholic Daughters Rosary at 5:00 p.m. followed by a Scriptural Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to Mass on Wednesday. One hundred years ago, Elvira Katherine Bindner was born on April 2, 1916 near Oyens, Iowa, the daughter of Bernard “Ben” Loesche and Rose (Bagge) Loesche. She attended school at St. Catherine’s Catholic Grade School in Oyens and later graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic High School in Remsen, Iowa in 1934. She was the longest living member of her graduating class. Growing up with three older brothers she had to be a tomboy to survive in that day and age. She lived at home after graduation and helped her parents and neighbors in the farm community. Elvira married the love of her life, John H. (Johnny) Bindner on September 7, 1943 at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Oyens. They celebrated their sixty seventh anniversary in 2010 prior to John’s passing. They lived north and east of Remsen for a few years prior to moving to the longtime home place east of Remsen. Elvira was the typical farm wife, helping with chores, field work, raising the kids, and cooking for the family and the farm help. After the family was raised Elvira accepted a position with the Hy-Vee grocery store in LeMars, Iowa cooking in the delicatessen. Elvira was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus, St. Ann’s Guild and Catholic Daughters of America. She was also a member of the Carmelite Guild and volunteered with the Floyd Valley Hospital Auxiliary. Elvira was an active member of the Heartland Auxiliary and was a huge advocate of the less able residents of Heartland Care Center. At times, residents and visitors thought she was on the payroll of the facility. Along with gardening on the farm, Elvira enjoyed fancywork like embroidery and quilting. Her family and friends enjoyed her great Sunday dinners and her wonderful cooking. Elvira’s hobby for the last years was playing cards with her friends and participating in the Marcus Pinochle Marathon, then traveling around with her best friends testing the restaurants and cafes of the surrounding area. She enjoyed reading the daily paper and her books, playing solitaire, and visiting with her friends and family. She will be lovingly remembered by her children; Patti Bindner of Denver, Colorado; John “Jack” (Sally Britt, fiancé) Bindner of Marcus, Iowa; son-in-law Jeff Gordon of Champaign, Illinois; and Joe (Angela) Bindner of Davenport, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Lisa Bindner, Sara (Dan) Krier, J.J. (Tia) Bindner, Benjamin Gordon, Nicholas (Kalin) Gordon, Jacob Bindner, and Hannah Bindner; five great-grandchildren, Sidney, R.J., and Colt Krier, Paisley, and Kennedy Bindner; sisters-in-law, Gloria Welte of Sgt. Bluff and Darleen Bindner of Placentia, California; and many nieces and nephews. Elvira was preceded in death by her parents; husband John, on March 2, 2011; and her daughter Joyce on October 20, 2011; brothers Urban (Lewine) Loesche, Gilbert (Armella) Loesche, and Raymond (Jean) Loesche. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Holy Name Parish Marcus or St. Mary’s School of Remsen.
