Donald E. Hurlbut, 77, of Le Mars, Iowa passed away on Thursday, September 10, 2015 at Unity Point/St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa. Funeral services will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, September 14, 2015 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa. Rev. Chris Meier of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa. Military honors will be conducted by Wasmer Post #241 of the American Legion. Visitation will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 13, 2015 at the Mauer – Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 5-7 p.m. with a prayer service scheduled at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will resume at 9:00 a.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Kyle, Korey and Kollin Brooks, Dennis Asche, Larry McMillan, Frank Froehlich, Don Butcher and Gerry Thine. Expressions of sympathy may be directed through www.mauerjohnsonfh.com Donald Everett Hurlbut was born on September 6, 1938, in Sioux City, Iowa to Ralph and Lela (Anderson) Hurlbut. He attended school in Sioux City and, during his last year of high school, he moved to Bronson, Iowa where he graduated in 1956. Following graduation, Don took a position with Concrete Pipe in Sioux City. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1956 and was honorably discharged in 1962. On June 6, 1958 Don and LeAnn Cornils were united in marriage at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Sioux City. At that time Don worked as a meat salesman for Gus Glazer. In 1964, the family moved to Le Mars, Iowa and Don began work as a salesman at Harker’s Meats. Don’s career later turned to trucking and he began driving for All-American Truck Lines. He and LeAnn later formed Donn-Lee Trucking and operated the trucking business until their retirement in 2002. He then drove for Zeitner Trucking until retiring in 2006. Don was a member of Wasmer Post #241 of the American Legion and the Le Mars Eagles Club. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes and NASCAR fan. He loved to spend time at Lake Okoboji at their trailer and on the water. He spent many hours on the golf cart visiting neighbors in the park. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years, LeAnn Hurlbut of Le Mars, IA; a daughter and her husband, Sheryl and Brad Brooks of Merrill, IA and their children and grandchildren, Kyle and Tonya Brooks and Rylen of Waterloo, IA, Korey and Ashley Brooks and Bella and Allie of Pleasant Hill, IA, and Kolin Brooks of Fremont, NE; step-granddaughter and her husband and children, Lisa and Duane Horton and Sydney and Seth of Otto, WY; a son, Randy Hurlbut of Sioux City, IA; a sister and her husband, Jan and Charles Johnson of Sioux City, IA, a brother, Jerry and Diane Hurlbut of Mooresville, NC; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and an infant sister. Memorials in Don’s name may be directed to the American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State.
