Martha Kriegel

Martha J. Kriegel, 96, of Decatur, IN, passed away peacefully at her residence on Saturday, July 30, 2016. She was born on March 12, 1920, in Adams County, IN, the daughter of the late Andrew and Mary Agnes (Keller) Foos. On February 14, 1942, she married Ralph J. Kriegel; he preceded her in death on September 21, 1973. She was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and the Women of St. Mary’s. She was also a member of the Catholic Ladies of Columbia Council 20. She worked as a homemaker until 1965 and then became the first secretary of St. Joseph Catholic School for 18 years, retiring in 1983. Martha touched several generations of students with her love and kindness. She is survived by her son, Donald (Patricia) Kriegel of Decatur; her 3 daughters, Mary Sue Kriegel and Kathleen (David) Foster both of Decatur, and Patricia (Doug) Schlemmer of Monroeville; 8 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by 3 brothers and 2 sisters. Visitation will be from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. & 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home, with a reciting of the Holy Rosary at 1:30 p.m. A Prayer Service will be held at 10:20 a.m. on Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. Presiding will be Father David Carkenord, with Father Bob J. Lengerich and Fr. Jose Panamattathil, VC, concelebrating. Burial will take place in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic School, Wyneken Memorial Lutheran School, Family Life Care, or Masses.
