Herbert L. Smitley, 90, of Decatur, Indiana, passed away on July 11, 2016 at Woodcrest Nursing Facility. He was born on November 19, 1925 in Mercer County Ohio to the late George W. and Effie (Yoder) Smitley. He retired from Dana Corporation in Fort Wayne, where he worked for many years and was a member of the Dana UAW. He was also a member of the Salem United Church of Christ in Magley. Herbert was in the Army and served his country during WWII with the Black Hawk Division. And a member of the American Legion Post #43 in Decatur. Herbert was an avid IU basketball and Indianapolis Colts football fan. He went on the Honor Flight in May 2014 and cherished it forever. He is survived by his daughters: Becky (Michael) Gage of Decatur, IN; Arlene Wallace of Ft. Wayne, IN; Joyce Buck of Dunkirk, IN; Sandy (companion Jonny) Stevens of Sarasota, FL and daughter-in-law, Sylvia Smitley of Decatur, IN. His sons: Nicky, Ronnie (Sam) and Mike Smitley, all of Decatur, IN. Also his former wife Virginia (Worden) Smitley; 10 grandchildren, Dianna, Shaun, Danielle, Jason E., Jason D., Stefanie, Katie, Leah, Tori and Emily; 6 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild; 4 step grandchildren and 6 step great grandchildren Herbert was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Ruth Wolfe and Marcella Smitley; brothers Calvin Smitley and George Smitley, Jr; daughters Sharon K. Smitley and Brenda Duff; a son Terry L. Smitley; and son-in-law, John Buck. Visitation will be held from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 14, 2016 at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home. Also one hour prior to the service on Friday. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, July 15, 2016 at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home. Burial will be held at the Magley Cemetery with Military graveside rites by the American Legion Post #43. Memorials may be given to the Honor Flight of Northeast Indiana.
