David Collier

David Lee Collier, 68, of Decatur, IN went to be with the Lord while at home surrounded by his family on Wednesday, July 6, 2016. David was born on December 12, 1947 in Adams County, IN to the late Claude Doyle and Sara Lu (Moore) Collier. Graduating from Decatur High School in 1966, David attended Indiana University in Bloomington earning a degree in business as well as a teaching certificate. On March 30, 1969, he married Sandra Joan Singleton, also of Decatur. After a year of teaching, David entered into the family business and took the reins of the Collier Insurance Agency as a General Agent for Columbus Life Insurance Company. During his career, he earned both the Chartered Financial Consultant and Chartered Life Underwriter designations. He remained passionate about his career to the end. David was presented with the Stephen Decatur Award for his tireless devotion to his community, having served on the Decatur Chamber of Commerce Board, as a founding member of the Adams County Ducks Unlimited, and on the Adams County Community Foundation for 10 years, where he chaired the complete renovation of the current site. Dedicated to building young men of character, David served the Boy Scouts of America through numerous leadership roles over the last 40 years; including Explore Scout Leader, Cub Master of Cub Pack 3072, Scoutmaster of Troop 72, Troop Committee Member, County Commissioner for Scouting, and District Eagle Advancement Chairman for 25 years. David received the Silver Beaver which is the highest adult leadership award in Scouting at the council level. David was a life-long member of the First United Methodist Church and served in many areas of the church such as, Youth Leader in the early 1970s, member of the Pairs & Spares Sunday School class, Missions Committee, Evangelism Committee, Pastor Committee, Parish Committee, Trustee Committee, & Memorial Committee. He organized 2 Lay Witness Missions, organized & led Homecoming Celebrations. He also led various remodeling projects at the church. Additionally, he chaired the committee that established the Church’s Endowment Fund. For his dedication and service to his community, David was awarded the Stephen Decatur Award in 1997 by the City of Decatur. In 2013, David received the State’s highest honor from Governor Mike Pence, The Sagamore of the Wabash. A man of purpose, principle, conviction and the nicest sense of personal honor, David will be sorely missed in his community. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sandra J. Collier of Decatur; two daughters, Jenifer Claire (Marc) Schloemer of Mooresville and Kristina Joanne (Doug) Gerber of Bluffton; son, Cameron David (Mary) Collier of Decatur; brother, Richard D. (Nancy) Collier of Decatur, IN and sister, Cynthia (John) Painter of Fort Wayne; 7 grandchildren – Sydney, Stockton, Saela, Wyatt, Barrett, Ethan, and Evelyn. Visitation will be from 1:00-6:00 p.m. Saturday, July 9, 2016 at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home and from Noon-1:00 p.m. Sunday, July 10th at the church. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, July 10, 2016 at First United Methodist Church with Pastor Amy Covington and Pastor Harold Klinker officiating. Memorials are to First United Methodist Church or A.C.C.F. David and Sandra Collier Community Enrichment Fund.
