Margie Gill Hickey Murphysboro, Illinois Obituary

Margie Gill Hickey

Margie Gill Hickey, 69, of Ava, passed away at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 29, 2016, at her daughter’s home in Carbondale, surrounded by her children. Born Dec. 31, 1946 in St. Louis, Mo., she was the eldest daughter of the late Emery Franklin and Margaret Mae (Capps) Monroe Gagnon. She was a 1964 graduate of San Juan Capistrano Union High School in Southern California. Over her working years, she reinvented herself many times. She loved to do crafts and was a jack of all trades. But she was most proud of her years working as a foster mom and as a caretaker for mentally and physically disabled children. She was a certified braillist, and, at the time, she was the only certified braillist in Southern Illinois. On Oct. 5, 1965, she married her children’s father, Donald Gill, Sr. of Louisville Ky., who died on July 28, 1987. She married her second husband, Larry Hickey, on July 4, 1992 in Murphysboro, Il. In addition to her husband Larry of Ava, she is survived by three of her four children: Donald Gill, Jr. and his wife, Kelli, of Waterloo, IL, Shanna Gill Cox and her husband, Danny, of Carbondale, IL, and Ronald Gill and his wife, Lisa, of Murphysboro. Her youngest, Annie Gill, passed away at the age of 5 in 1984. Margie is survived by two step children Kelly Wood and her husband Chuck Wood, and Deric Rice, all of Salem, IL; her sisters, Marilyn Monroe-Scnear of Austin, TX, Marsha Mansker and her husband Lewis Mansker, of Oahu, HA, and a special friend, who was as close as a sister, Carol Jacobson and her husband Neal Jacobson of DeSoto; as well as eleven beautiful grandchildren Aaron, Chloe, Katie, Brittney, Levi, Kristi, Tori, Malorie, Ross, Ashley Zachary; and several nieces and nephews. Her much-loved second father, Donald “Pops” Gagnon of Sierra Vista, Az., also survives her. She was preceded in death by her parents. A Funeral Mass for Margie will be held at 12 noon Friday, August 5, 2016, at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Murphysboro, with Father Federico Higuera officiating and burial at St. Andrew Cemetery, where Margie will be buried next to her beloved daughter, Annie. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, and Friday until 11:45 a.m. at Pettett Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Celtic Hospice.
