Helen L. Garner, 91, of Murphysboro, passed away at 1:55 a.m. Saturday, July 23, 2016,at Herrin Hospital in Herrin, Illinois. Helen was born on April 12, 1925, in Murphysboro, Illinois, to Clarence Stevens and Eva Mae (Crombar) Stevens. She had worked for thirty one years at the former Brown Shoe Company in Murphysboro, and then after working fifteen years at Lincoln School, she retired as head cook at Lincoln School in Murphysboro. Mrs. Garner was a Protestant by faith. She was a member of the V.F.W. Post # 7190 Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Murphysboro Senior Citizens. Helen married Walter Glenn Garner on October 29, 1949, in Vergennes, Illinois, and he preceded her in death January 6, 2012. He is survived by one son and daughter in law Dennis and Cashma Garner of Murphysboro; one granddaughter Ashley Garner of Murphysboro; and one brother Donald Stevens of Benton. She was preceded in death one infant son Michael Glenn Garner, three sisters Mildred McGuire, Sadie Paul, and Wanda Davis, three brothers Charles "Dutch" Stevens, George Stevens and Joe Stevens, and her parents. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 27, 2016, at Pettett Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Allen officiating and burial at Murdale Gardens of Memory. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shawnee Christian Nursing Center or Celtic Hospice.
