Alta Varner

Alta L. Varner, 75, of Murphysboro, passed away at 1:46 a.m. Wednesday, June 29, 2016, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Alta was born on March 27, 1941, in Murphysboro, to Thomas G. Rains and Edith (Clover) Rains. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Varner was a member of the First Christian Church in Murphysboro. Alta married Norman Varner on February 26, 1983, in Murphysboro, and he survives. Other survivors include two children Vicki DeLaria of Des Moines, IA and Jeff Poole of Carbondale, IL; three step children Jo Ellen Ingle of Anna, Alice Lynn Wehrheim of Vergennes, and Laurie Ann Crabtree of Murphysboro; six grandchildren Skyler Linnett and Alexa DeLaria of Des Moines, IA, U.S. Navy YM3 Matt Ingle, Chasity Cano of Makanda, Brandon Wehrheim of Vergennes, and Samantha Crabtree of Murphysboro; six great grandchildren; and two brothers and their wives Dale and Norma Rains of Collinsville and Benny and Frances Rains of Millstadt. She was preceded in death by two sisters Wanda Rains and Donna Tuthill and her parents. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 1, 2016, at Pettett Funeral Home with Rick Sutton and burial will be at Murdale Gardens of Memory.
