OBITUARY ROGER D. PHILLIPS was born February 19, 1929, in Birmingham, Alabama. He was the youngest of three children to the union of Dennis Phillips and Johnnie Mae (Ellington) Phillips (his two elder sisters Alice and Thelma preceded him in death). His family moved to Chicago, IL when he was an infant and attended Forrestville Elementary School and Wendell Phillips High School. He was enlisted in the United States Army and Reserve in 1951 during the Korean Conflict serving in the Alpha Company 1092 Division Combat Engineer Battalion. He was Honorably Discharged in 1957 as a decorated soldier with the rank of Sergeant and Military Police Officer receiving the following honors: 1 OS Service Bar, United Nations Service Medal and Korean Conflict Service Medal (with 3 Bz Camp Stars). He also received outstanding recommendations for promotion to Lieutenant. On March 4, 1958 he was united in Holy Matrimony to Bettie L. Robinson (who preceded him in death), and to this union 7 children were born, 2 sons, (one son preceded him in death) and 5 daughters. Roger was a devoted, protective, sensitive and loving father, husband and grandfather. He made sure the home was a safe haven for his family. He was always concerned with what was going on in the household. He often expressed how hard work, focus and discipline is essential in making your future better. A perfect example in work ethics. He never missed a day from work no matter what. He loved to laugh and talk and was very good with children. He made fatherhood look easy. I can still remember all of the places he used to take us to from the zoo, to bike riding, roller derby, wrestling and the movies. He loved watching documentaries, westerns and what he calls “swashbuckler” movies. He was a father of all trades, from sewing, doing hair, changing diapers, fixing things and even cooking (which he was quite good at!). Nothing was too hard for him when it came to his family. No matter how grown or old we were he was always there being a father to us. He leaves to cherish fond memories, 6 children: Nadine Campbell (Ronald), Denise Robinson, Roderick P. Phillips, Lynette Perry (Samuel), Wendy Phillips and Penny A. Phillips; 6 grandchildren: Desiree M. Campbell, Julius R. Phillips (Jenell), Joshua A. Perry, Dara D. Campbell, Wendy R. Montgomery and Kimberly A. Montgomery, 9 great-grandchildren: Jaila Phillips, Julian Phillips, Kimmayah Whitehead, Kimmora Whitehead, Davion Thomas, Demarion Whitehead, Avantae Wright, Asiah Wright, Avonis Wright and Johnnie “Tre”, Jordan, III his; Nieces, Robin L. Chaney, Karen Alexander and Nephew, George Alexander. He also leaves devoted friends, William Sledd (Dorothy), Audrey “Tootsie” (Lewis) Proctor. Roger D.
