Patricia Lane Obituary

Patricia Crandall Lane died Sept. 16, 2016, in Boise, Idaho, following a short illness. The cause was cancer. She was 68. Patty properly regarded herself as an authentic Sun Valleyite, a rarity in her generation. She was born in the Sun Valley hospital, then occupying the third floor of the Lodge, on Sept. 15, 1948, delivered by Dr. John R. Moritz, the resort’s first resident physician and, later in Patty’s life, her stepfather. Her mother was Jeanne Rodger Lane Moritz, a former Chicagoan and one of the 17 women who founded The Community Library Association, and her father was John Crandall “Pete” Lane, a native Idahoan and the owner of Pete Lane’s, the Sun Valley ski store, and a founder of the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation. Her grandfather, John Pusey “Jack” Lane, a merchant and livestockman, established his businesses in Ketchum a century ago. Her home growing up was on the Box L Ranch, the Lane family sheep property just south of Ketchum that spread the width of the Wood River Valley and up Elkhorn Gulch. She received her primary education at Ketchum Grade School and then began secondary studies at Annie Wright School, Tacoma, Wash., finishing them at Girls’ Collegiate School, Claremont, Calif. She went on to do undergraduate work at Mount Vernon College, Washington, D.C., and Boise State University. Patty’s happiest professional years were in sales at Pete Lane’s. The store in the 1960s and 1970s was one of the ski industry’s elite leaders in high-fashion skiwear and technologically advanced ski equipment. She was a favorite salesperson among the shop’s upscale, socially prominent and style-conscious clientele, who trusted her fashion acumen. She was herself, as a young woman, very much in vogue, a self-described “clothes horse.” Later, she continued in retail at Sturtevants and as keeper of accounts at Cristina’s Restaurant. She served as a trustee of The Community Library and was a parishioner at St. Thomas’s Episcopal Church in Sun Valley and Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Hailey. In retirement, she moved to Hailey, where she enjoyed her friends and her dogs. She was predeceased by her mother, father, stepfather and stepbrother, Daniel Moritz (Janice). She is survived by her sister, Susan Sloan Lane of Whitney, Texas; her brother, John Rodger Lane (Inge-Lise) of Ketchum; her stepsister, Derry Ann Moritz Shepard (Charles) of Davis, Calif.; and her stepbrother, Alan Moritz (Marylee) of Sacramento, Calif. The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Community Library Association, Box 2168, Ketchum, ID 83340, or www.comlib.org.
