Douglas James Fraser Obituary

Douglas James Fraser, Demorest, lately of Decatur, Georgia died July 2. He was 86. Douglas was preceded in death by his oldest son, Douglas Fitzdouglas Fraser, who died July 2, 2013. Douglas was also preceded in death by his parents, Roderick and Dora Watson Fraser, sister, Muriel Corck, and brothers, Roderick and Donald Fraser. He is the last surviving member of his immediate family. Douglas is survived by his wife of 66 years, Leah, sons, Donald (Julie), Brian (Barbara), (Cameron) and Blake (Meredith), daughter-in-law, Jenny Fraser, along with grandson, Justin and granddaughter, Tamsin, Douglas F. Fraser's wife and children. Douglas was born in Hudson, FL., the only U.S. citizen in his family. His early years were spent in Bracebridge, Ontario, Canada, then Toronto, Canada, where he and Leah later met, then married. They moved to Cleveland, Ohio where Doug embarked on a career in textile, specifically artificial fibers. He was a fiber scientist upon retiring, due to health issues. Doug enjoyed the technical aspects of his work which included analysis of fiber through x-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. He also enjoyed photography as a work tool, and it became a life-long hobby, especially on trips to Europe and many trips to Scotland to visit the ancestral grounds in Beauly. Doug and Leah moved to Decatur in the 1970s and they became fully engaged in the Scottish community, where Doug, in addition to being chairman of the Clan Fraser Society of North America, also became president of the St. Andrews Society. He also enjoyed years of membership in the Robert Burns Club. Doug was also proud he had been a King Scout the Canadian equivalent of an American Eagle Scout. There will be no funeral. After cremation, the remains will go to the Family cemetery in Port Carling, Ontario. A Celebration of Life has yet to be scheduled.
