Patricia Sapp Obituary

Patricia S. Sapp, 82, of East Palatka died peacefully at home on Thursday, September 1, 2016. Pat was born in Cambridge City, Indiana, the daughter of Adelbert and Ruby Sieg. She became a Floridian when she moved with her parents to Jacksonville in her early teens. The family relocated to Starke, where Pat attended high school and met her future husband, Leslie Sapp, and many friends whom she remained close to throughout her life. Pat attended the University of Florida until her marriage to Leslie. When Leslie opened the Palatka branch of Florida Pest Control and Chemical Company as manager, Pat worked as the first secretary. They eventually moved to East Palatka, where they purchased the property on the St. Johns River that would be their home for the rest of their lives. In between raising three daughters, Pat enjoyed working for the Putnam County Agricultural Extension Office under Tommy Clay Sr., and then for the office of Drs. Walter Weigel and Roy Campbell, where she made good use of her amazing people skills. She was also an active member of Christ Independent Methodist Church and sang in the choir for many years. Pat was very active in the community and knew just about everyone in town. She was a wonderful cook, and she and Leslie often presided over lively gatherings at their dinner table, especially at their fishing cabin at Horseshoe. She loved the beach but was a good sport about Leslie’s passion for hunting and often accompanied him to the hunting camp. She also loved just about any sport and was such an avid NASCAR fan that she attended her first Daytona 500 in her seventies. After Leslie’s retirement, Pat and Leslie enjoyed many driving trips to every state in the continental United States and Alaska, as well as every province of Canada except the Northwest Territories and Newfoundland. Pat served as planner and navigator, while Leslie documented their travels on videotape and scouted out yard sales. Pat was preceded in death by her father, Adelbert Sieg; her mother, Ruby Sieg; and her husband, Leslie Sapp. She is survived by her three daughters, Laura Sapp of Gainesville; Paula Wald and husband, Jim, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and Traci Sapp of Citrus Springs. Visitation will be held at Johnson Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, September 6. Funeral services will be held at Christ Independent Methodist Church in Palatka at 11 a.m., Wednesday, September 7 with Pastor Michael Hudson officiating. Burial will be at the Ben Sapp Cemetery in New River, Fla., following the service. Memorial donations may be made to Christ Independent Methodist Church, 4078 Silver Lake Drive, Palatka, FL 32177, or Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center, 6400 St. Johns Avenue, Palatka, FL, 32177.
