Maxine Toves

Maxine Pelham Toves, 87, of Midway, FL and formerly of Palatka, passed from this life on Friday, October 14, 2016 at Capitol Regional Medical Center, Gadsden Memorial Campus in Quincy. A native of Fadette, Alabama, she resided in Midway for the past year and half moving there from Palatka where she had lived since 1980. Maxine was a homemaker and was devoted to caring for her family. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Palatka as well as Senior Friends. Maxine enjoyed crocheting, sewing, mind puzzles especially Sudoku, and Jesus. Her whole life was a witness. She was also very good at crafts and especially at making beads which she enjoyed gifting to family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, John E. Pelham and Bertha Griffin Pelham, her husband, Joaquin “Johnny” Toves, and 2 brothers, Dr. John L. Pelham and Rev. James Earl Pelham. Maxine is survived by 2 daughters, Carol Hendricks (Matt) of Midway and Nancy Methvin (Kenny) of Palatka, 2 sons, John David Toves (Debbie) of Mobile, AL and Chris Toves (Becky) of Satsuma, 2 sisters-in-law, Judy Pelham of East Palatka and Myrtice Pelham of Thomasville, GA, 10 grandchildren, Bryan Hendricks (Denise), Lindsey Selph (Richard), Whitney Jones (Alex), Alexis Methvin, John Methvin, John D. Toves, II (Lauren), Jessica Toves Thurston (Brett), Joshua Toves (fiancé Joy), Dylan Toves (Leila) and Conner Toves, 5 great-grandchildren, Patrick Kimple, Russell Thurston, Kaylyn Smith, Noah Longfellow and Meghan Dyal (Stephen), 3 great-great-grandchildren, Dakota, Oliver and Skip, nieces, Susan Burcham (Bryan) and Kathi Bates (Ben), nephews, Jack Pelham and Jim Edd Pelham (Violet), her best friend, Ozzie Williams and all in her Senior Friends group. Services celebrating Maxine’s life will be at 3:00 P.M. Saturday, October 22, 2016 at Johnson-Overturf Chapel in Palatka with Rev. Vernon Harkey officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Palatka. The family will receive friends Saturday from 1:00 P.M. until the time of services at 3:00. A meal will follow at First Baptist Church Palatka Memories and condolences may be expressed to the family at Maxine’s Book of Memories page at www.JohnsonOverturffunerals.com.
