Herman Smith Obituary

Herman Rogers Smith, 88, of Keystone Heights, passed from this life on Sunday, July 31, 2016 at the Edward M. Poe Care Center – Hospice of St. Francis in Titusville following a brief illness. A native of Pritchard, Alabama, he resided in Keystone Heights since 1993 moving there from Palatka. At age 15, Herman began serving in the merchant Marines and upon turning 18, served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and then in the Air Force during the Korean War. He also spent some time serving in the Florida National Guard. Herman worked for 38 years with Georgia Pacific retiring in 1990 as Maintenance Supervisor. He was very dedicated to the Masonic Order, having served in 1978 as Worshipful Master of Palatka Lodge #34 F&AM, a member of the Putnam Country Shrine Club, the Morocco Temple Shrine in Jacksonville, The Scottish Rite and York Rite Bodies as well as had been involved with the Order of Eastern Star. An avid golfer, Herman was a member of the Palatka Men’s Golf Association and the Keystone Heights Golf Association. Other interests that he enjoyed were fishing, woodworking, tennis, bowling and boating. Herman was a member of St. James United Methodist Church in Palatka. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hobson Smith and Stella McLeod Smith, 3 brothers, W. Cecil Smith, H.P. Smith, Jr. and Albert E. Smith and 2 sisters, Juanita S. Harris and Betty S. Hall. Herman is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lillie M. Smith of Titusville, a son, Terry C. Smith and wife Luci M. of Titusville, a granddaughter, Teresa C. Lyle and husband Kristopher M. of Melbourne and 2 great-grandchildren, Kaden M. Lyle and Gavin M. Lyle as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Services celebrating Herman’s life will be at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 3, 2016 at St. James United Methodist Church with Pastor Don Hanna and Rev. Randy Strickland officiating and Palatka Masonic Lodge #34 F&AM conducting Masonic Rites. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery East with the U.S. Air Force conducting military honors. Visitation will be Tuesday from 6-8 P.M. at Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home in Palatka. Flowers are gratefully accepted or memorial donations may be sent to St. James United Methodist Church, 400 Reid Street, Palatka, FL 32177.
