Patricia D'Asaro Obituary

Patricia Anne D’Asaro (née Clayton) of Bagdad, Florida — a former resident of Pensacola, Florida, and beloved wife of Dr. Charles Noel D’Asaro — passed away of natural causes on Friday, October 22, 2016. She was 77 years old. Born July 27, 1939, in Sutton Coldfield, England, Patricia emigrated post World War II with her family to Charlotte, North Carolina. She attended Charlotte Catholic High School and then Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia on an art scholarship before transferring to University of Miami, where she achieved a BS degree in Zoology with a minor in Geology. Patricia, known as Pat to her many friends, was employed in the laboratory of noted marine geologist Dr. Cesare Emiliani, specializing in mass spectrometry and participating in oceanographic cruises, when she met her future husband, Charles, while he was a doctoral student in Marine Biology. They were married May 4, 1963, in Coral Gables, Florida. After moving to Pensacola when Charles was employed by the University of West Florida, Pat, a devoted mother, was active in numerous church and civic groups while raising two daughters. She served in multiple roles at the Cathedral of Sacred Heart School and parish, including school librarian, PTA president and choir member, and later became administrative assistant to the Most Rev. Rene Gracida, Bishop of Pensacola-Tallahassee. She was active in state and national leadership levels of the Diocesan Councils of Catholic Women and was an officer of the UWF Faculty Women’s Club. Pat shared a love for the environment and historic preservation with her husband. In 1974 they purchased the antebellum Thompson House in Bagdad, Florida, and renovated it with her parents, Kathleen and Allan Clayton, before moving there in the 1980s. Pat was a founding member of the Bagdad Village Preservation Association and president of the Santa Rosa Historical Society where she spent 10 years organizing Depot Day festivals and Christmas tours of historic Santa Rosa County homes. She was involved in numerous environmental organizations including Nature Conservancy and Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER). She was appointed by Gov. Lawton Chiles to serve on the board of the Historic Preservation Grants Program and served on another state board that managed citizen participation in state parks. While she remained a proud British citizen her entire life, Pat loved her adopted country and believed deeply in giving back. She became a committed community activist with a passion for bringing people together, whether by helping organize the International Festival as a member of St. Rose of Lima Parish, or by leading the Riverwalk Art Festival in Milton, Florida, as an officer of the Santa Rosa Art Association. She opened her home to Bagdad Elementary school tours and all kinds of community events while sharing her experience as a board member across numerous organizations, including the Navy League, Santa Rosa Clean Community System and Rails to Trails. In 1990, she was recognized by the Santa Rosa County Chamber of Commerce as “Woman of the Year.” Pat is survived by her husband Charles; daughters Deidre (Dee Dee) Catherine D’Asaro Martinez of Atlanta and Deborah (Debbie) Anne D’Asaro Duggan of Pensacola; brother Peter Ashley Clayton of St. Augustine, FLorida; grandchildren Charles Noel Martinez, Kaitlin Marie Duggan and Riona Eileen Duggan; and numerous relatives in Florida, Georgia, New York, Great Britain, Germany, Sicily and Cuba. Visitation will be at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 6451 Park Avenue, Milton, Florida, on Saturday, October 29 at 9 AM until the memorial Mass begins at 10 AM. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Patricia’s name. Lewis Funeral Home, Milton, has been entrusted with arrangements.
