Margaret Conover Obituary

Margaret Carter Conover, 98, of Gulf Breeze went to be with our Lord on Tuesday, March 12, 2013, at her home while being attended by her loving family. Born in Topeka, KS to Florence Owens Carter and Ollie Martin Carter, she spent the first 6 years of her life in Murfreesboro, AR. Her family then moved to Bagdad, FL, where she grew to adulthood. She was a graduate of Milton High School class of 1929, attended Galloway Female College in Searcy, AR, and Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL majoring in Fine Art. She is survived by her husband, George Conover, Sr., whom she met in Pensacola while she worked as a draftsman on N.A.S. They married in 1944. After WW II, the couple first built a home in Milton, FL, where they raised four children. They then built and moved to their retirement home in Gulf Breeze in 1982. Margaret was very active in the Methodist Church all of her life, first as the pianist for the Bagdad Methodist Church, then as a member of the First United Methodist Church of Milton. She continued her service to our Lord as a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church of Gulf Breeze. She was a lifelong member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and at one time served as Adah for the Florida Grand Chapter. She was an avid amateur artist and belonged to several art associations in the area. Her many oil paintings grace the homes of family members and friends. Margaret loved to travel with her husband and children. Married to a teacher, they would spend summers traveling throughout North America. After her husband’s retirement, the pair continued to travel including such places as Western Europe, Hawaii, Guam and Japan. Family has always been a very important focus in her life. Much of her travel plans included reuniting with family and friends, as well as visiting museums and famous landmarks. Preceded in death are her parents, and two of her brothers, Winston Carter and Martin Carter, and granddaughter Margaret Louise Barnard. Left to cherish her memory besides her husband of 69 years: brother, Fletcher Carter (Edith), of Radford, VA, son, George Conover, Jr. (Margaret E.), daughters, Linda Cook (Ron), Susan Sponaas (Richard), Margaret Donigan (Charles Williams); grandchildren, Karla Barnard King, Samantha Cantrell (Brad), Sean Donigan (Maryanne), Geri Lynn Sponaas (Marcus Mullis), Brian Donigan (Leah), Tracy Conover, George Gavin Conover, and Gwendolyn Conover; great grandchild, Brendan Donigan. A Memorial Service will be held at the Bagdad United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 16, at 3pm. Burial to follow at the Bagdad Cemetery. Lewis Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Special thanks to the staff of Covenant Hospice, Pastor Lance Whorton, and the Santa Rosa Sherriff’s office for all their assistance to the family.
