Clarence Fred King, Jr. of Bristol passed away Tuesday, September 6, 2016 in Panama City at the age of ninety-two. Born in Halcyon dale, Georgia, November 29, 1923, Clarence was the son of the late Fred Franklin King and Nettie Lee (Sumner) King. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1942 to 1945, serving at the Pentagon for one year and on the USS Bennington for the remainder of his service. In 1946 he began work as dispatcher for the United States Forestry Service in the Apalachicola District in the fire control look-out tower plus work on the grounds. After World War II, he finished high school. Later he completed an electronics degree at the American School of Chicago. In 1953, Clarence transferred to Ashville, North Carolina to work in communications; in 1959, he transferred to Montgomery, Alabama and continued to work in communications. He retired from active duty in 1981 and returned to Florida. Clarence was a deacon of Lake Mystic Baptist Church and was active in the American Legion and Veteran of Foreign Wars. Clarence was well known for his great love for his wife, family and church. He loved working in the great outdoors. In addition to his parents, Fred Franklin and Nettie Lee King, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Fenn) King; a son, Clarence Fred King, III; a brother, Douglas Leon King; and a sister, Tommie Lee Suber. Survivors include his son, Robert L. King and his wife, Carolyn of Montgomery, Alabama; his daughter, Sharleen King of Bristol; eight grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Sharon King of Birmingham, Alabama; and a sister, Jewell K. Thomas of Panama City. The family will receive friends at Lake Mystic Baptist Church, 1:30 p.m. ET, Saturday, September 10. The service will follow at 3:00 p.m. ET at the church with Reverend Jerry Chumley officiating. Interment will be in Lake Mystic Cemetery with full military honors.
