Florence V. McHugh, age 85, of Milford passed away peacefully on Friday, August 5, 2016 in Milford Hospital. She was born on November 9, 1930 in Bridgeport to the late Daniel and Nancy Salerno Verrilli. Florence is survived by her dedicated daughters Jeanne McHugh-Broughton of West Haven, Eileen (David) McHugh-Silva of Brooklyn, NY and Barbara (Michael) Ceneri of Orange, cherished grandchildren Katherine and Emma Silva of Brooklyn, NY and Nicholas Ceneri of Orange, loving sister Nancy Verrilli-Doering, sister-in-law Margaret McHugh, nephew James Sinanis, grandnephew, grandniece, many cousins and friends. Besides her parents, she is predeceased by her devoted husband, of 56 years, Eugene “Gene” McHugh, sister Theresa Verilli Sinanis and son-in-law Bruce Broughton. Florence was a graduate of Central High School in Bridgeport. In the 1950’s, she was employed by Sikorsky Aircraft, where she met her husband and soul mate Gene. Beginning in 1973, she was a secretary for the City of Milford Planning and Zoning/Building Department for 20 years. After retirement, she volunteered at Milford Hospital and the Bureau of Education and Services for the Blind. An active parishioner and member of the Lady’s Guild at Christ the Redeemer Church and a longtime member of the Milford Senior Center and their choir. Florence will be remembered as a loving wife, sister, mother, grandmother and loyal friend. She was a crossword puzzle enthusiast and avid reader who enjoyed living life to the fullest. Calling hours are Tuesday, August 9, 2016 from 4pm to 8pm at the Smith Funeral Home, 135 N Broad St., Milford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 10th in Christ the Redeemer, 321 Oronoque Rd., Milford at 10:30am. Interment will be private. Donations may be made in her name to Alzheimer’s Assoc. of CT, 200 Executive Blvd, Suite 4B, Southington, CT 06489.
