Luis Vargas

Luis Alfredo Vargas, 85, husband of the late America (Arce) Vargas, died on Monday, August 15, 2016 at Meriden Center surrounded by his loving family. Born in Rincon, Puerto Rico on November 9, 1930, he was the son of the late Cecilio and Josefa (Mercado) Vargas. He was a longtime Meriden resident. Mr. Vargas was employed by the Meriden Police Department as a Detective and was a business entrepreneur, owning numerous businesses in the area. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served with the U.S. Army. He was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church and was very active in his community. Mr. Vargas founded the Hispanic State Baseball League for youths and adults and was a scout for the New York Mets. He also founded the Hispanic Softball League in the State of Connecticut. He was one of the founders of the Latin American Society in Meriden and in his early years, he was very involved in the City of Meriden Politics. He is survived by two daughters, Ada Vega and her husband Lingo of Meriden and Nelly Vega and her husband Ray of Port Lucie, FL; three grandchildren, Tanya Vega, Monique Vega and Rafael Vega III and two great-grandchildren, Rafael Vega IV and Trinity Cooper. He was predeceased by a grandson, Louis Z. Vega, one sister and three brothers. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, August 22, 2016 at 10 a.m. at St. Rose of Lima Church. Everyone is asked to meet directly at the church. There are no calling hours. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. His family would like to thank the Meriden Center for the loving care and attention that was given to him. In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory may be made to Meriden Center, 845 Paddock Avenue, Meriden, CT 06450.
