John Kaferle

John A. Kaferle, 95, husband of Helen (Tobicyzk) Kaferle, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 9, 2016 at Apple Rehab Coccomo. John was born in Yukon, PA. on June 11, 1921, the son of the late Anton and Anna Kaferle. John served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, and flew numerous combat missions as a flight engineer on a B-17 Flying Fortress. He moved with his wife Helen (Tobi) to Meriden in 1947 and worked for nearly 40 years at International Silver Co. and then Eyelet Specialty Co. John loved repairing and restoring old cars and was especially known for driving a 1951 Ford that he rescued from the scrap heap. He also loved watching the New York Yankees, UConn’s Women’s Basketball team and most of all, taking care of his grandchildren. John was a longtime supporter of the Red Cross Blood drives and donated more than 10 gallons during his lifetime. He was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church, a member of the Antique Veterans and Y’s Men of Meriden. Besides his wife of 70 years, he is survived by his two sons, John A. Jr. (Marcia) of Ridgefield, CT. and Daniel J. (Linda) of Chapel Hill, NC.; four grandchildren, Karl Kaferle of Norwalk, Anne Kaferle of Helper, UT., Colin Kaferle of Portland, OR. and Ian (Annie) Kaferle of Berkeley, CA. He is also survived by his sister, Paula Christian of Pittsburgh, PA. and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Anthony and Conrad; his sister, Stephanie and two half-brothers, Joseph and Martin. The family would like to thank the staff of Masonicare Home Hospice and Apple Rehab Coccomo for their caring and compassion during John’s final days. The funeral service and burial will be private. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are under the direction of the John J. Ferry & Sons Funeral Home, 88 East Main St. Meriden, CT 06450.
