Elisabeth Masterson

Elisabeth (Betty) Angelone Masterson passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 6, 2016, surrounded by her family. She was born in Benson, Vermont, the daughter of Dr. Romolo Angelone and Attorney Julia Angelone of Scarsdale, New York. Her father was in the Italian diplomatic corps in New York and Washington, D.C. As a child, she lived in China, Italy and in Tokyo, where she and her family spent two years in an internment camp. Upon returning to the U.S., the family moved to Greenwich, CT. Betty was an honors graduate of the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Greenwich. She earned an A.B. from Manhattanville College followed by an M.A. from Columbia University. She taught Latin, French and English at the School for Performing Arts in New York City and in schools in Maplewood NJ, Edgemont NY, and Middletown CT. She married James A. Masterson and in 1960 began raising a family. In Meriden, she served on the Venetian Flood Committee and was an officer in the Roger Sherman Elementary School and Washington Middle School PTAs. For many years, she served on the Board of Directors and was President of the Meriden Girls Club (now Girls, Inc.), and as member of the Board and President of the Meriden Historical Society. She had been a volunteer at Choate Rosemary Hall, and, for years, a volunteer at the Meriden Friends of the Library. She was pre-deceased by her beloved husband of 56 years, James A. Masterson. She leaves daughters Veronica J. of San Francisco, Julia M. (Scott) Gest of State College, PA, and son, Robert L. (Xiaorong Sun) of Lawrenceville, N.J., grandchildren Phoebe Masterson-Eckart, Caitlin and Conor Gest, and Theodore S. Masterson. She was also pre-deceased by her brother Louis Paul Angelone. Betty lived her life with dignity, grace, kindness, and love. The family plans a private burial and, at a later time, a private memorial service.
