Robert Olson Obituary

Robert “Bob” L. Olson went home to meet his maker on Christmas Day, December 25, 2012. He was born December 22, 1934 in Aberdeen, S.D., the youngest son of the late Arnold L. Olson and Adeline (Knapp) Olson. He is pre-deceased by his brothers Norman and George, one sister Alice, and also his youngest son Douglas who passed away at age 11. He leaves behind his loving wife of 56 years, Geraldine (Egert) Olson. He is survived by three daughters: Kathleen (Lou) Mayers, Laurie (Bill) Bursztyn, Nancy (Len) Kendall, and two sons: Kenneth Olson (Sue) and James (Adriana) Olson. Also, his grandchildren: Derek and Chad Mayers, Nathan and Jessica Bursztyn, and James Olson, Jr. A native of South Dakota, Bob graduated from Aberdeen H.S. in 1952 as an honor student and Boy State Candidate. He attended Northern State Teacher's College for two years in Aberdeen. He later earned a B.S. Degree in Engineering at the School of Mines in Rapid City, S.D. After his graduation he took a position with the U.S. Patent Office in Washington, D.C. as a Patent Examiner while attending G.W. Law School evenings, earning a Degree in Patent Law. Bob has been a resident of Enfield since 1960. He worked as a Patent Attorney for Combustion Engineering for 25 years in Windsor, CT. He was also active in his community with several organizations. As a member of the J.C.'s, Bob was involved in the early development of Brainard Park and town athletic programs. He was a member of the J.F Kennedy Jr. High Building Committee participating in the construction of the school. As a council member of the Lutheran Church of our Redeemer he was instrumental in its construction and rewriting of its constitution. He organized their first Vacation Bible School and was a greeter and usher for the church. Later in his life, Bob enjoyed being a crossing guard for the Enfield Schools. Having a special spot in his heart for children, he always encouraged them to do their best. Bob had a great sense of humor and was blessed with many good friends throughout his life. He loved to tell stories of his youth, growing up in South Dakota, and the challenges he encountered in life. He enjoyed activities with his family and friends; camping in the summer when the children were young, a good game of cards, and just about any sport. He courageously struggled with heart and lung disease for many years. We would like to thank our dear friends and neighbors for their help and support, the Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer for their devotion and time, and the volunteers and employees of Enfield Home & Community Hospice for their compassion and caring. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. & 6-8 p.m. on Friday Jan.4th at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels located on 43 Shaker Rd in Enfield. A Service will be held Saturday Jan.5th at The Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer on 20 North St. in Enfield at 11 a. m.
