Tony Herrara

Lifelong resident, cattleman and cowboy of Marvel, CO, Tony Herrera, died from complications of cancer on October 11, 2016. Tony was born in Marvel, Colorado on July 12, 1930 to Marcelino & Dorothy Herrera. He married Virginia Huntsman on September 13, 1951 in Gallup, NM. Tony & Virginia recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. Tony was well known in the Durango area, a town celebrity of sorts, with a twinkle in his eye and enjoyed Friday night country dancing. Tony loved to tell stories of working on many western movie sets in the 50's - 70's around the Durango area, with movie legends such as John Wayne, James Stewart, Ben Johnson, Janet Leigh and many others. Tony was first and foremost a cattleman and horseman, but also an oil field driller, road construction equipment operator, rodeo cowboy, & worked many other jobs as necessary to raise his family. Tony is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Virginia Herrera; sons David (Donna) & Scott Herrera; daughters Debra Tafoya (Mike) & Diane Herrera; brothers Tom, Marshall, Levi, & Pete Herrera; nephew Brad Herrera & family; 5 grandchildren & 2 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his sister Teresa and granddaughter Virginia Lynn.The family would like to extend their gratitude and a special thank you to San Juan Oncology & Radiology. Tony's cremains will be interred at Marvel Cemetery, located at the junction of CR 131 and 129 on Friday, November 11, 2016 at 2:00 pm.
