Gregory Cavanagh Obituary

Gregory Cavanagh died peacefully in his sleep June 25, 2016 at the Cottonwood Inn Rehab and Extended Care facility in Durango, located in the Three Springs area. Gregory Cavanagh, known as Greg, was born December 16, 1930 in Camden, NJ and raised in Gloucester, NJ. His heart was tied to his childhood experiences in Oklahoma. He was the only child of John J. Cavanagh and Helen (Scheer) Cavanagh. Greg was an avid athlete who played college baseball and football. He played a season in the minor leagues as a pitcher. He graduated from Oklahoma State University with a degree in architecture. He attained his masters in business administration at George Washington University. Greg spent several years in the Air Force followed by civil service. He was often the youngest and promoted to supervise those older than he. After retiring from civil service in Denver, he moved to Durango. He and Bob Wolfe formed APCM Group, a Durango architecture firm in the 1980s and 1990s. They also formed Associated Real Estate Management which primarily did property management. In 1983 he and Virginia Miller-Cavanagh (they married in 1988) formed Accountax Consultants, later known as Accountax CPA’s, PC which they ran together until 2014. Greg loved preparing taxes and working with his clients. He would often say tax work was just as creative work as architecture. Greg had four children. His son, Michael Cavanagh, predeceased him. He is survived by his son Christopher Cavanagh of Watts, OK and daughters Cathrine (Phillip) Barnhart of Grove, OK and Patricia (Brian) Myers of Durango. His daughters gave him his 3 granddaughters, Shawna Cole, Candice Blair and Kelsey Stewart. He is also survived by his step daughters, Heather (Jason) Sali of Boise, ID and Amber (Joshua) Levine of San Diego, CA and 6 step grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held 2-4pm at the DoubleTree ballroom July 16, 2016. Please bring your favorite Greg story to share. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to Hospice of Mercy or to Colorado Talking Book Library.
