Doris Mathis Obituary

Mrs. Doris Louise (Bullard) Mathis, of Newport, Arkansas, departed this life on Wednesday, August 10, 2016, at the age of 84. She was born June 25, 1932, the daughter of William Taft and Ruth Ednea (Davis) Bullard. Mrs. Mathis retired from Southwestern Bell after 36 years as a telephone operator, and was a member of the City of Newport Beautification Committee. She loved reading magazines, working with her flowers, and traveling. Mrs. Mathis especially enjoyed a vacation she took to Hawaii. She was the best cook ever, loved cooking for family and friends, and was famous for her cornbread. Mrs. Mathis was a member of the College Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Elbert Mathis; two brothers, Jackie Bullard and Lionel Bullard; and her parents. Mrs. Mathis is survived by one son, Michael Robert Riley and wife, Christi, of Jonesboro; one daughter, Michelle Hood and husband, J.D., of Conway; three brothers, Wayne Bullard of Newport, Grimsley Bullard of Newport, and Benoni Bullard of Bradford; three sisters, Kathern Kennedy of Cabot, Regina Everett of Newport, and Martina Thompson of Swifton; four grandchildren, John Riley of Boling Green, Kentucky, Lauren Hood of Conway, Rachel Thornton of Fort Benning, Georgia, and Ashton Lecrone of Conway; one great-granddaughter, Brooklyn Hood of Conway; and a host of nieces and nephews. Friends may visit at the funeral home Friday, 6:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral services are 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Jackson’s Newport Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Ryan Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in Watson Cemetery. Those honored to serve as pallbearers are John Riley, Will Thornton, Ben Lecrone, Jared Nyland, Levi Everett, Rodney Bullard, and Dawson Bullard. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the Staff of Lindley Healthcare and Rehab, Rochelle Nyland, and Lacy for their loving care of Mrs. Mathis.
