Pauline Nickel Obituary

Peacefully, in her 78th year, and surrounded by the love of her family at Innisfree House, Marion Selina PAULINE Nickel (nee Pace) entered into eternal life with her Heavenly Father on July 19, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer. Pauline was the dear wife of Alfred for almost 55 years and the cherished mother of Craig (Lori), Paul (Karen) and Carolyn (Ric Black). Pauline was the extremely proud grandmother of Tyler & Courtney Nickel and Annette Blais. She is survived by brothers David Pace, Philip Pace (Linda), sister Phyllis Fowler (John Penn) and sisters-in-law Judy Pace, Lucy Snider (Don Oleniuk) and Rita Yoder (Virgil). She was also a beloved aunt to her many nephews and nieces. Pauline was predeceased by her parents Rev. G. Howard & Selina (Holman) Pace, her brother Rev. Dr. Peter-John Pace, her sisters-in-law Joyce Pace and Elizabeth Pace, her brothers-in-law Dr. Ernest Nickel and Boyd Snider, and her nephews Darren Pace and Jason Pace. Pauline was born in Fergus in 1938 and lived in a variety of locations throughout Ontario during her early years. She attended Stratford Teachers College and began her teaching career in Scarborough before moving to the Kitchener School Board (which later became the Waterloo Region District School Board). She taught elementary school until the much anticipated arrivals of Craig, Paul and Carolyn. Being a dearly loved mother to her three children was Pauline’s greatest joy. Pauline returned to teaching after 12 years as a full-time mother and homemaker, during which time she also completed her Bachelor of Arts at University of Waterloo. She taught for a number of years at Sheppard Public School where she was a highly respected Grade 1 teacher in the French Immersion program. Pauline finished her career in education at Bridgeport Public School. Pauline was a faithful member of W-K United Mennonite Church where she served in a number of leadership capacities on various committees and boards. Pauline also served in her community for a number of years with the Volunteer Action Centre and the Hospice of Waterloo Region. Pauline lived her life to the fullest and with a rare commitment to the well-being of her family and wide circle of friends, a focus that undoubtedly arose from her deep and abiding Christian faith. She was energized by people and loved cooking and baking for the many family and social gatherings that she so willingly hosted over the years. She loved nature (especially the beauty of flowers) and could sew almost anything! Friends and family are invited to share memories and celebrate Pauline’s remarkable life with her family at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home, 171 King St. S., in Waterloo from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 7:00-9:00 p.m. on Friday, July 22. The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 23 at W-K United Mennonite Church, 15 George St. in Waterloo. Reception to follow in the church hall with interment to follow at Parkview Cemetery in Waterloo. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Innisfree House, the Grand River Regional Cancer Centre or the Mennonite Central Committee. Donations can be arranged through the funeral home at www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445.
