Larry Folliott Obituary

FOLLIOTT, LAURENCE (LARRY) DIED PEACEFULLY, SURROUNDED BY HIS FAMILY IN WATERLOO, ONTARIO ON AUGUST 7, 2016 IN HIS 93RD YEAR. Father of Terry Simmons, Peter Folliott, Laura (Michael) Archibald, Nancy (Steve) Jacobi, and Alan (Kristine) Folliott. Grandfather of Nathan and Adam; Sarah and Jonathan; Tara, Lee, and Mac; Jessica, James, Michelle and Brianna; Great-grandfather of Grayson, Rachel, Kadence, Kaylee, Megan, Lucas and Caleb. Survived by his wife Beverly-Anne (Adams/Bardwell) and brother Don Folliott of Cambridge. Predeceased by his parents Major Alfred Folliott M.M. E.D. and Kathleen (Hall) Folliott and sister Rose-Marie Rintoul. Larry was born in Hamilton and graduated from McMaster University. He served in the Canadian Army in WWII. His teaching career began at Eastwood Collegiate then on to Vice-Principal at Grand River Collegiate and finishing his career as Principal of (his beloved) Waterloo Collegiate until his retirement in 1986. Dad wrote this himself but we thought more should be said. The tales of the later years in Dad’s life are now legendary but the memories of our time with him paint an even more colourful picture. He wasn’t a social man yet he loved people. This seems hard to fathom but the tears shed by his caregivers shine some light on this silent admiration he had for people. Not so silent in later years. During his career, the respect he had for his staff and co-workers taught us a great lesson in loyalty. We’re glad that Dad won’t have to ever see the inevitable closing of WCI. Growing up, we assumed Dad had no hobbies. What we didn’t fully understand was that we were his hobbies- we being his children and grandchildren. His love of all sports meant that we really didn’t have much choice in the matter and that was just fine with us. When the grandkids came along, we assumed he’d transfer his skate sharpening skills to them but he continued to be the only parent out to the men’s slow pitch league to watch his youngest, who was then in his 30’s. Dad was a minimalist. He would always joke that his whole life was in two boxes under his bed. One of those boxes contained every school photo Dad had ever been given of his many grandchildren, carefully framed, with name and date on the back. He thrived on routine and it served him well in later years. So it didn’t come as a surprise, that about a week before passing, he told one of his support workers that he “wouldn’t be here for lunch on Sunday because he was having lunch with his Dad”. He died at 11:55 am Sunday, with 5 minutes to spare to meet his Dad. At Dad’s request, there will be no visitation and cremation has taken place. But he would also like us to celebrate and “do it up right”! Please join family on September 24th, beginning at 4:00 p.m. and ending long after the streetlights go on, at 24 Farmbrook Place in Kitchener. Stay for a few minutes or stay into the evening. Food and ‘refreshments’ will be served so please make the appropriate plans. For further information, please contact Laura at 519-741-4100. * Dad supported many causes but since not everyone may wish to donate to The Liberal Party of Canada, The Grand River Regional Cancer Centre would be a wonderful option. * Special thanks to the wonderful staff in the Downey Neighbourhood at The Village at University Gates. Larry’s family is grateful for all the loving care that they gave to our father and grandfather.
