Doreen Elizabeth Johnston Obituary

Doreen passed away peacefully at her home in Lucan on Monday, June 6, 2016. Born in Cumbria, England, on Sunday, January 17, 1932, Doreen Elizabeth (nee Hedley) of Lucan, formerly of Seaforth, was in her 85th year. Beloved wife of the late G. Irwin Johnston (March 27, 2015). Loving mother of Elizabeth and Shawn O’Neill of Ilderton and Neil and Joan Johnston of North Andover, Massachusetts. Cherished Grandma of Jordon and Allie O’Neill, Brendan O’Neill and Dinah, Danielle, Jay and Hannah Johnston. Dear sister of Evelyn Millican and Douglas Hedley, both of England. Doreen will also be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews and friends. Predeceased by her parents Sydney and Dorothy (nee Haugh) Hedley, sister Patricia Stamper and her husband John, and siblings-in-law Tom Millican, Dorothy Hedley, Roma Johnston and Harry Johnston and his wife Marie. Doreen loved the spring where she could sit and watch the birds and the budding trees and flowers from her window. Doreen cherished her six grandchildren and she would knit or crochet just about anything they wished for, but her specialty was afghans. There was always a box of Froot Loops cereal, homemade strawberry jam, shortbread and a big blueberry pie readily available at Grandma’s. Doreen arrived from Cumbria, England, and shortly after started her nursing career at the Seaforth Hospital. A career that lasted over 45 years. Doreen learned to play Bingo only in the last couple years and it became her favourite past-time, in addition to her daily London Free Press crosswords. Cremation has taken place and memorial visitation will be held at McGlynn Family Funeral Home, 87 Goderich St. W., Seaforth, 519-527-1390, on Thursday, June 9 from 7-9 p.m., and will continue on Friday, June 10 from 10 a.m. until the time of Doreen’s memorial service at 11 a.m. Interment will take place in Maitlandbank Cemetery followed by a reception at Egmondville United Church. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations to the Seaforth Community Hospital Foundation would be appreciated and can be made through the funeral home.
