John’s light began to shine on October 28 1970. That beautiful light was sadly extinguished on September 4 2016. John (Behr) was a loving, perfect husband to Nina (Beener), cherished son of Nancy (Nee Smith), proud brother of James, accomplished son of the late John, adored son in law to Lary and Donna, best brother in law to Lise & Rick, Teri & Ivo, goofy uncle to Téa, Kira, and Uly and a wonderful cousin and nephew to many members of the Smith and Johnston Families of Toronto. John had a lust for life that led him to a multitude of accomplishments. He graduated from Guelph University in Animal Sciences, attributed to his love with standardbred racing. He loved horses, and looked forward to returning to the race track in the future. In his 20’s, the travel bug took him to Australia where he worked for a year, and to Korea to teach English. It was near this time that his dream of becoming a pilot grew. He completed his aviation studies at Seneca College, worked at Buttonville airport, and moved out to Alberta where his sense of adventure was rewarded with flying into thunderstorms. On purpose. He flew low-level surveys over the jungles of Gabon, the deserts of Morocco and the prairies and mountains of North America. He flew over the forest fires of northern Ontario, where the romance with his wife, Nina, began and will never end. Eventually the runways of the world greeted him warmly as his airline pilot career goal was realized. He took advantage of every moment in life, making friends across the globe, visiting as many sights as he could, and bringing home the best recipe for Spaghetti Carbonnara. In recent years, his Scottish roots led him to the Highland Games. His strength of body and character, dedication to the sport became apparent through his quick improvement in these events. His guidance and encouragement to new throwers was heart warming. John also holds a world record certificate for a caber toss event. John’s empathy towards others in all aspects of life was unmatched. Midnight calls from friends in need never went unanswered. Drives home were never out of the way. Hugs were always available. Smiles were always plentiful. Kisses always lingered. Laughter always ensued. Dances were always close. During his quiet times, he would read and snuggle his cats, hike, plan travel adventures with Nina, practice his Highland games, admire his home and garden with Nina’s hand in his and he would always love her with all of his heart. Never has a soul been so kind. Never has a man been so loved by his wife. In lieu of flowers, a donation to your charity of choice would be appreciated. He would perhaps recommend Sick Kids hospital, any animal shelter, or simply helping someone who needs a hand. Think of this gentle giant by attending a Highland Games heavy event. Cheer loudly. Laugh, smile and love in his honor.
