George Herbert Sweetnam Obituary

Dr. George H. Sweetnam 1942-2016 The family of Dr. George H. Sweetnam would like to announce his passing on July 12, 2016. George was proud of his Northern Ontario upbringing in New Liskeard, Ontario with his siblings Constance and Lee. He had a deep appreciation of nature throughout his life, which he instilled in his children and grandchildren. George left New Liskeard to attend the University of Guelph, where he earned a degree in Microbiology and met his wife Marian of 49 years. He then pursued his dental degree at the University of Toronto in 1971. George started his private practice in Lindsay shortly after graduation and served the community for 43 years. Here, they raised George’s proudest accomplishments; his 3 children - Steven, Nancy and Peter. He strongly believed in giving back to the community and profession. Local volunteer positions included serving on the Board of Cambridge St. United Church, Chairman of the Lindsay Airport, Chief of Dental Staff at Ross Memorial Hospital, President of the Lindsay Lightning Bolts Swim Club and as a Senior Official with Swim Ontario. Professionally, he started as Chair of the Peterborough Dental Society and progressed into the role of President of both the Ontario and Canadian Dental Associations. George thoroughly enjoyed being a member of the Peterborough Concert Band and Kawartha L’il Big Band as a trombone player. He loved flying his float plane for trips up north, boating and his annual fishing trips with his brother and family. George’s dedication to Dentistry was recognized by the Ontario Dental Association for outstanding contributions by being awarded the Barnabus Day Distinguished Service Award in 2007. George’s love of ice cream and pies (especially blueberry) will be lovingly remembered by his children. Steve Sweetnam (Nicole Sweetnam), Nancy Sweetnam (Frazer Smith), Peter Sweetnam (Shelly Dougan) and his six grandchildren; Ryan, Erin, Oscar, Cleo, Declan and Kieran. The family wishes to thank the caregivers at the Ross Memorial Hospital and Peterborough Regional Heath Centre for their wonderful support. A Celebration of Life will be held at 2pm on Saturday August 6th, 2016 at Cambridge St. United Church, 61 Cambridge St. North, Lindsay, ON. If you wish to honour George’s memory, the family would appreciate contributions be made to the Kawartha Trans Canada Trail Fund (ktct.ca), Cambridge St. United Church or the Lindsay Academy Theatre (academytheatre.ca).
