Les Bertouche Obituary

Les H. (for hero) Bertouche September 10, 1931 – September 22, 2016 With heavy hearts, we announce that Les has left us. Les died of complications from the rare neurological condition Progressive Supranuclear Palsy after a brave 5 year battle. His wife Lee was by his side, right where she has been happily “velcroed” for 47 years. Born in Toronto, Les worked from an early age, ultimately pursuing a career in the printing industry. Les was a successful entrepreneur (co-founder of Kwik Kopy Printing Canada and founder of Speedy Signs), a boater, winemaker, card creator, skier, golfer, bridge and poker player, “fix-it” guy and, later, self-proclaimed leisurologist. Les and Lee were co-captains of the LesLee III and partners in all aspects of their lives since their marriage in 1969, joining two families. A huge hole has been left in the lives of his children Michael Bertouche (Valerie), Wendi Robins (Tony Reymer), Terri Williams (Grant) and Scott Gilmour as well as grandchildren Cameron, Mitchell, Nicole, Jordan, Thomas and Jack, for whom he was a source of love. They were his joy. He is survived by his brother Al (the late Vera) Bertouche and was predeceased by his sister Betty Dunlop. After years of hard work, Les and Lee retired to Collingwood in 1990 for its skiing and boating. Les was active with Probus, Theatre Collingwood, and the Georgian Bay Club. His happiest times were spent on or near the water, whether charting a course aboard the LesLee III in Georgian Bay, North Channel or thru the inland passage to Florida, bare-boating in the BVI, cycling the beaches of Hilton Head, cruising the Caribbean or the Mediterranean, or peacefully enjoying the waterfront view from his home at Mariner’s Haven. His Ontario family will miss Les sitting at the head of the dining table at the Muskoka cottage (The Anchorage) this Thanksgiving, where three happy generations have enjoyed so many special gatherings and built traditions over the last 20+ years. Les felt blessed to have had wonderful family and friends share in the adventures of trips, holidays and celebrations creating unforgettable memories. The family wishes to thank Dr. Brian Recoskie, the caring staff of Sunset Manor and his dedicated earth angel, Norlyn Sandoval, as well as all those who have supported Les and Lee, providing nourishment for both their bodies and souls during this long, tough journey. There will be a fond-farewell service at Trinity United Church (140 Maple Street, Collingwood) on October 15 at 1:30 p.m, with a reception to follow. If desired, donations to Sunset Manor, Collingwood would be appreciated, to assist it to carry on the important work of caring for those most vulnerable in our community. In lieu of flowers, Lee would prefer to share a glass of wine and memories of Les.
