Ethel Dale Sivell Obituary

Ethel Dale Sivell (Brydon) Born July 7, 1927 to Dr. William Hall Brydon and Ethel Dale Brydon of Brampton, Ontario, Dale passed peacefully at Meaford Long Term Care June 16, 2016 with her family at her side. Predeceased by her beloved husband of 52 years, Allan Sivell BA BED BPE (1925-2002), Loved mother of Ted Sivell (Yvonne Weltch) of Thornbury ON; Christine Sivell (Joe Ferri) of Clarksburg ON; and Charles Sivell of Nelson BC. Adored and doting grandmother of Taylor Sivell (Alex Viau), Melbourne, Australia; Kylie Sivell, Rossland BC; Quinto Ferri (Anna Holancin) Emerson Ferri; Eliot Ferri. Grandmother to Charles’ daughter Zoe Button. Proud great-grandmother to Samarah Ferri (Riley Boychuk) and Joseph Ferri. A favourite of many cousins, nieces, nephews and their families, Dale delighted in their visits and in hearing ‘all the news’. She also treasured her many friends from Brampton, Collingwood, the Taylor Statten Camps, the Osler Bluff Ski Club, Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts and her many years of Bridge. Ethel Dale was the last surviving grandchild of Harry Dale, founder of the Brampton Dale Estate which for decades produced spectacular roses, orchids and many other blooms. When young Ethel Dale joined her siblings and cousins at play in thirty five acres of greenhouses, the Dale Estate was shipping four and a half million roses a year. The greenhouses were full of gorgeous blooms and scents, which she loved, but it was the steam tunnels beneath that were the real source of adventure and fun. The tunnels were high, wide and ran for hundreds of meters in all directions. As well as being the best place imaginable for hide and seek, they were a novel way of travelling to and from cousin’s homes. The war years were years of loss for Dale. Her own mother passed when Dale was just 15 and her closest brother, Ted, was killed in action in the last few days of the war. Dale was resilient and independent, however, and with the support of her father and her oldest sister Elizabeth (Libs) Dickson she went on to attend the Banff School of Fine Arts in the late 1940s and complete her Bachelor of Arts at the University of Toronto, Victoria College, 1948. On a ski trip to Blue Mountain in 1948 she met handsome young Allan Sivell and a long and happy marriage ensued. While raising her family of three in Brampton, it was hard to say who was the more active the children or Dale, yet in the midst of those hectic years of supporting Allan in his teaching career and ensuring a rich environment for her children, she remained committed to her art. Dale was, above all else, a creative person with a life-long sustaining interest in painting and all aspects of art. After Allan’s retirement in 1982 they moved from Brampton to Collingwood. Together, they enjoyed 20 years of skiing, their many friends and managed the exasperations of their offspring, and Allan’s failing health with good humour and grace. Dale continued to paint, at last in her own studio. We are grateful to have known and loved Dale, a wonderfully creative yet practical woman, who was glamourous, gracious, determined, with a keen sense of humour and an artist’s unique way of seeing the world. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Tuesday, June 28, 7-9 pm, Fawcett Funeral Home, 82 Pine St, Collingwood. Celebration of Life: Wednesday, June 29, 2016, 1:00 p.m. First Presbyterian Church, 200 Maple St., Collingwood. Reception downstairs in church hall following service. Wheelchair accessible. If desired, donations in Dale’s memory can be made to a charity of your choice or to The Blue Mountain Watershed Trust.
