Rita Porter

Porter, Rita Perrett (nee Greig) Rita passed away peacefully on July 13, 2016 with family at her side at the age of 81 in Victoria, BC after a painful bout with cancer. Rita was born in Coxheath, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Rita graduated from Sydney Academy with a scholarship to Dalhousie University. She was the first graduate from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She practiced in Kitimat, Vancouver, Winnipeg and Halifax/Dartmouth. She worked for many years in the field of psychiatric nursing. Rita became a very knowledgeable west coast gardener and devoted many volunteer hours to public gardens in Victoria BC. She was an active member of the Engineer’s Wives Association. Rita’s smile, sense of humor, strong sense of equality for all, and determination will be sorely missed by her husband Hugh, son David, and daughters Kim and Daphne as well as her “adopted family” in Kathmandu, Nepal. Rita was predeceased by her brother Nelson and parents Hannah and Arthur Grieg and is survived by two nephews Justin and Andrew Greig. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Victoria Hospice. A private burial will be held at Mountain Cemetery, Yarmouth, Nova Scotia at a later date. Donations in Rita’s memory can be made to the Victoria Hospice (victoriahospice.org) or the Canadian Red Cross.
