Woodrow Melvin Pilgrim Obituary

Woodrow Melvin Pilgrim, 79, passed peacefully away on September 25th, 2016 at Gander Hospital. Mr. Pilgrim was born on August 20, 1937 in St. Anthony Bight, NL to Frederick and Alma (Lambert) Pilgrim. He was a volunteer (soldier) with the Salvation Army for over 65 years. During which time he served in numerous capacities including Corps Treasurer in Goose Bay, NL and St. Anthony, NL for a total of 35 years. He was also a commissioned bandsman, playing tuba until he had to reluctantly stop playing due to his health. Woodrow proudly served as a telegraph operator with the United States Air Force on AFB Goose Bay during the 1960’s and 70’s. He also held the position of Town Clerk for the town St. Anthony, NL. Woodrow and his wife, Marie, sold their home and cottage in St. Anthony and moved into a senior’s cottage in Gander in 2013. Woodrow often commented on how much he loved living in Gander and thoroughly enjoyed being in close proximity to many family members and friends in central Newfoundland. The love of family and friends was the hallmark of Woodrow’s life. At the time of the closing of AFB Goose Bay he had the opportunity to take a position that would have meant he would have to move further from his aging parents. Woodrow chose to go back to St. Anthony and help care for his parents and mentally handicapped brother. He did this for 18 years, until the death of both his parents and then along with Marie they have cared for his brother for the past 20 years until Woodrow’s death. Woodrow is survived by his wife Marie (Hynes) son Wade (Karen) and daughter Roxann, as well as grandchildren Jonathan and Joanna Pilgrim. Brothers Ralph (Greta), Ezra and sister Doris Richards; many nephews, nieces and many family members. Predeceased: by his Father Frederick; Mother Alma, his Sister Betty and Brother Cecil.
