Thomas Philpott Obituary

The family of Tom Philpott (formerly of Gander) announces his passing in Corner Brook at the age of 91. He leaves to mourn with many happy memories his children: Tom (Jo-Anne) of Corner Brook, NL; Barbara (Lawrence) Groves, of Brandon Manitoba; Wayne of Lufkin Texas; and Donald (Carla) of Mississauga, ON; and his grandchildren, Steven, Nadine, Paul, Katie, Jeremy, Julie, Meaghan, Chelsea, Emily and James; and great- grandchildren Kaylie, Cole, Austyn, Adam, Andrew. He was predeceased by his wife Anne in 2012 after 60 years of marriage. Born in Plate Cove East, Bonavista Bay, he moved to Gander as a young man where he met and married Anne (Maloney) of Sweet Bay. Together they raised their children in the family home in Gander. He worked for 42 years at the Gander Airport, from the forties to the 1980’s, where he was always respected for his strong work ethic. First and foremost Tom was a family man - always making time for his growing family and looked forward to their many visits. When time permitted, his favorite pastimes were salmon fishing and rabbit catching with his children and buddies. He grew up fishing with his father and spent many summers in Plate Cove and Sweet Bay, enjoying and helping family and friends. He dearly loved a feed of cod fish (fresh or salt) and would often say “there is no fish like Bonavista Bay fish”. Due to wife Anne’s’ declining health, in 2009 Tom moved with her to Corner Brook to be closer to family support. Tom was a member of the Knights of Columbus and spent many hours volunteering at St. Joseph’s Parish. He was a man of faith and values and was true to them in all his activities to the end of his life.
