Obituary

Frederick “Fred” Burton McIntyre

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Frederick “Fred” Burton McIntyre. In the early morning of August 24, 2016, Fred passed away at Thompson General Hospital. Fred was being comforted by family at the time of his passing. Fred was 88 years old.

Fred was born in Grenville Quebec on August 16, 1928. He was the 5th of 8 children of Nora Ethel and Joseph Earl MacIntyre. It was during his youth he learned to make Maple Syrup on the family farm and developed a love for “real” maple syrup. However, farming was not for him and in 1947 Fred started work at Inco in Port Colbourne, Ontario. It was Inco that noticed his last name was spelt wrong on his birth certificate and Fred started spelling his name “McIntyre” while the rest of his family was “MacIntyre”.

Fred met his wife Ellen in Port Colbourne, Ontario while he was boarding with her Grandmother. They married on October 4, 1952 and had their oldest daughter Nora in 1957. In July of 1960 Fred was transferred to Thompson Manitoba with Inco. The only route in was by train and Inco put the family up at the Thompson Inn until their company home was available on Hemlock Crescent. Unfortunately that home started sinking and they moved across the street until they built their new home on Martin Bay in 1963. Fred and Ellen were still living in that home at the time of his death.

In 1965 his youngest daughter Janet was born. In 1966 Fred started building the family’s cabin at Paint Lake. He loved the cabin and spent as much time there as he could with his family and many friends. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and gardening. He was very proud of his island garden and it grew larger every year. Fred loved watching the sunset over the lake with a “stubby” in hand.

In the winter Fred played hockey with the Inco Shift League and bowled with his wife Ellen in the Thursday evening regular league at the Thompson Bowling Lanes. In May 1985 after 37.5 years Fred retired from Inco and started “working” with Ellen at the arena concession during the winters. Kids called him “the pop man”; others called him “Fast Freddie”. He filled the pop machines, visited with friends and watched hockey. It was during this time that Fred and Ellen bought snow machines and started going to the cabin during the winter.

Fred had 2 grandsons, Jonathan and Matthew Lamontagne. He was very proud of his grandsons and loved them very much. He loved to share stories of his grandchildren’s exploits and accomplishments.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents Nora and Earl MacIntyre, his brothers Donald “Bunny” MacIntyre and Elmer MacIntyre, and his sisters Tini MacLean and Enid Stone.

Fred is survived by his wife Ellen, his daughters Nora (Grant) Hignell, Janet (Doug) Lamontagne, his grandsons Jonathan and Matthew Lamontagne, and his sisters Beryl Woods, Dorothy McVicar, and Georgie Mott.

Special thanks to Rachelle Huculak, Lori Landers, Renee MacLean the staff in emergency and on the 2nd floor of Thompson General Hospital, the staff NHA home care, and his many friends and neighbors who came to visit and help.

A celebration of Fred’s life to take place on Monday, August 29 in the Cheemo Room at the Royal Canadian Legion from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke foundation.
