Irene Cook

Irene Cook was born on January 16, 1931 in The Pas, Manitoba. She was raised on The Pas Indian Band. She received her education at Elkhorn Residential School. Irene met and married Solomon Cook on Monday, February 9, 1948. Together they raised 11 Children and 3 grandchildren. She leaves behind 92 Grandchildren, 56 Great-Grandchildren, 2 Great-Great Grandchildren Irene was a hard worker and had a lot of pride. She was self-taught. She attended evening courses to better herself. She did not believe in handouts, she instilled this belief in all her children and grandchildren. At the age of 13 she started her medical field by working in the hospital. To make extra money she would make approximately 100 bannocks for Trapper Festival, and in her early years she worked in The Pas Airport Sanatorium as a nurse’s aide, at St Anthony Hospital as a house keeper and midwife. She also worked at woman’s jail as guard. Irene was also a kindergarten teacher at the Big Eddy School for many years. This was where her late husband Solomon bought a school bus for the nursery children which was passed on to her son Derrick, this bus has been in her family for 50 years and continues to this day. Irene was also the administrator for McGillivary Care for 19 years. She also served as a counselor for The Pas Band for 2 terms. Irene’s boarding house and taxi service where also a family service, proudly started by her. Mom’s favorite pastime was going to bingo with her friends Fay Dutkiwicz Lillian Settee, Gloria McGillivary, Emma Crane, Jane Cook and the late Shirley Mae, visiting with friends and family, talking on the phone. Irene passed away quietly and with dignity on Thursday, December 26, 2013 at St. Anthony’s Hospital, The Pas at the age of 82 years with family by her side. She is survived by her children David, Johnny, Annie (Stan), Margaret, Jeffery, Derrick, Jerry (Brenda), Rosina, Madeline, Jefferson, and Clarice. Grandson Keaton (pumpkin). Siblings Lillian Bignell and Max McGillivary. Friends Eleanor, Faye, Lillian, Gloria, Emma and many, many more too numerous to mention. Irene was predeceased by her husband Solomon, parents Mathew and Mary, sons Daniel, Greg, Rod, Sisters Louise Raulston, Christiana Gamble, Victoria Ducharme, Annie McGillivary, Ronnie McGillivary ******************** God saw you getting tired, And a cure was not to be So he put his arms around you And whispered “Come to Me” With tearful eyes, we watched you pass away Although we loved you dearly We could not make you stay… A Golden Heart stopped beating, Hard working hands at rest.
