Clemence Georgette Moreau

Lewiston – Clemence Georgette (Jean) Moreau, 88, a resident of Schooner Estates, Auburn, formerly a longtime resident of Livermore Falls, died Sunday afternoon at Marshwood Center in Lewiston. She was born July 2, 1924 in Durham, the daughter of Oliva and Leda (Laliberte) Jean. Her grandparents later moved in with her parents on their farm in Auburn. She attended school in Auburn; it was a one room school house that held grades 1 through 8. Around the age of 16, Clemence went to work at Fred Drapeau’s store. Clemence had room, board and $4.00 a week. One of Clemence first purchases was a pair of ice skates and would skate on the edges of the Androscogggin River. After working at Fred Drapeau’s store she moved in with Grandma Sophie Laliberte in Lewiston and worked in the textile mills, the Bleachery, and at the Hill’s Mill. Clemence and Theresa Moreau (Roland Moreau’s wife) worked together at Hill’s Mill, and that is how she met her future husband, Normand Moreau. Normand and Clemence were married in the Upper Chapel of St. Peter’s and Paul’s Catholic Church in Lewiston on July 5, 1947. Normand and Clemence bought a house on Knapp Street in Livermore Falls where they raised their children. Normand died May 6, 1984 and Clemence continued to live there until the year 2002, living at this residence for 50 years. Clemence at that time moved in with her son Maurice and his wife Wendy in Livermore, and had recently moved to Schooner Estates in Auburn. She was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay and also attended St. Phillips Church in Auburn. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella and Jay-Livermore Falls Senior Citizens. She was as active as an 88 year old could be, she loved going to church, eating out and going to her weekly seniors meetings.
