Obituary for Josiah Whitehead
August 9, 2012
Josiah Samuel Whitehead, September 2, 1932 – August 8, 2012
Our father, brother, and Friend passed away August 8, 2012 at 2:20 PM from complications of CHF 3 weeks short of his 80th birthday (more cake for us, Dad!) surrounded by his loving family.
He was born September 2, 1932 to parents, Orral T. and Juanita L. Whitehead at Sutter hospital Sacramento, California.
Dad spent all of his childhood and most of his senior years in the Sacramento area with periods in between in Oregon, Iowa, and Texas. His last year was spent back in Oregon, which he loved with his son and beloved daughter-in-law and family.
Dad graduated H.S. in 1950 from San Juan high, Citrus Heights Ca. (sister Florence 1959) and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration in 1954 from Sacramento State College.
He spent his entire career of 45 + years in the furniture industry both retail and wholesale as an executive, Starting with Brunner’ of Sacramento Calif. (20 Yrs.) and a number of different companies there after.
He had a huge affinity for travel, especially Hawaii and So. Lake Tahoe with each being semi-annual trips for at least the last 20 years. During this time he was able to share these times and experiences with his children and family instilling the same love he held.
He was a lover of the Arts, art of any kind, flowers (especially his 150 + rose bushes), and foremost a shopper from HELL, his favorite merchants will miss him dearly! Special note: Women from far and wide just adored Josiah when he’d wear his loud and crazy aloha shirts.
In his earlier years the outdoors, camping, and fishing were his passion, having never seen a trout stream that didn’t get his full attention.
Josiah never served in the armed forces, as he was a sole surviving son having lost 2 brothers Leroy and Wallace during WII. He was also pre-deceased by his parents, 2 infant daughters Marlana(1959) and Delana (1961), and his 1st wife and mother of his children Marilyn F. Whitehead (February 2012).
He is survived by his children Susan Troxell(Bruce) Bonney Lake Wash., Robert Whitehead(Tana) Harrisonburg, La., Richard Whitehead(Dorothy) Idaho, David Whitehead(Rosie) Hubbard, Oregon, sister Florence Jenkins(Bob) Puxico, Mo., and special friend and companion Pat Thompsen Citrus Heights Calif. Also surviving are 21 grand children, 17 great grand children with 2 more on the way. Whew!! He had his hands full keeping up with that, but loved them all.
As per his request Josiah will be cremated (no formal services) with ½ of his remains to be interred with is grandson Gerry in Oregon and the remainder scattered in the Hawaiian Islands.
He will be greatly missed by all that have had the opportunity to know him.
