John Fartro Obituary

John P. Fartro, age 95, of Canonsburg, died at 7:22 p.m. on Friday, September 15, 2006, in Canonsburg General Hospital.  He was born July 9, 1911, in Canonsburg, a son of Carmine and Pauline Novak Fartro.  Mr. Fartro was a member of St. Patrick Church.  A 1928 graduate of Canonsburg High School, he was a member of National Honor Society and delivered a sports speech at his graduation.  Mr. Fartro served in the local National Guard Company, the 10 Medical Detachment, for 10 years.  He owned the Maytag store in Canonsburg for more than 40 years.  Mr. Fartro was a member of Canonsburg Kiwanis and was a past president and district governor.  He played baseball with the Home Furniture and East End Tigers local baseball teams. He worked out with the Pittsburgh Pirates for several years.  On December 27, 1934, he married Dorothy M. Marrow, who died December 18, 2000.  Surviving are a son, John C. and wife Sara Nan Fischer Fartro of Fredericksburg, VA; two daughters, Sylvia Satifka and husband Larry of Washington and Diane Russell and husband David of Columbus, OH; a brother, Tom Fartro of Houston; two sisters, Betty Fartro of Mt. Lebanon and Lucy Cannon of Canonsburg; 11 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.  Deceased are three brothers, Rocco, Tony and Joe Fartro; and four sisters, Rose Churray, Pauline Churchel, Mary Kolarosky and Ann Niemiec.  Friends will be received from 2 to 7 p.m. on Sunday in Salandra Funeral Home, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, Joseph P. Salandra, supervisor.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 18, in St. Patrick Church.  Burial will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery.  Please add or view Tributes at www.salandrafuneralhome.com
