Andrew Frank Olis Former Grosse Pointe Woods resident, Andrew Frank Olis, “Andy” 92, passed away peacefully on Monday June 25, 2018 surrounded by family after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Andy was born on November 25, 1925 in Detroit, Michigan to John and Margaret Olis. He grew up on Detroit’s east side where he attended St. Cyril’s grade school and graduated from Detroit Catholic Central High School in 1943. Following high school, he joined the United States Navy who sent him to the University of Michigan to obtain his college degree. During his time at the University of Michigan, Andy became a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. Upon completion of his studies in Engineering and Naval Science, he was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy where he served his country in Panama on a patrol craft in World War II. After the war, Andy joined the United States Naval Reserves and was called back into active duty as a Naval officer to fight in the Korean War aboard a mine sweeper in the Korean Sea. Andy remained active in the United States Naval Reserves for many years, was promoted to and retired as the rank of Captain. Upon his discharge from active duty, Andy joined the J.L. Hudson Company store in Detroit as an Assistant Buyer. He soon became the Buyer of ready made draperies and soft home goods. During his early years with J.L. Hudsons, he met and married the love of his life, Harriet Mann. After 28 years with the J.L. Hudson company, Andy fulfilled his dream of becoming a business owner. He became the owner of Mack Avenue Drapery & Interiors on Mack Avenue in Grosse Pointe Woods. Andrew enjoyed working in the community and making all his own decisions. Andy was a member of Our Lady Star of the Sea church, the Senior Men’s Club of Grosse Pointe and past President of the Harbor Place condo association. His greatest joy was spending time at his home on Burt Lake in northern Michigan with his children and grandchildren. Andy enjoyed his retirement spending the winter months in Siesta Key, FL treasuring time with family, visiting friends and proudly walking the entire Siesta Key beach every day. He will be remembered for his strong Catholic faith, love of his country, impeccable work ethic, long lasting friendships, generosity, honorable character and most importantly, his incredible love for his family. Andrew is survived by Harriet, his loving wife of 64 years. His adoring children, Patricia (Martin) Casey, Nancy Olis, Martha (Russell) Langton, Barbara (Scott) Turnbull, Andrew (Tiffany) Olis and his beloved grandchildren, Alex, Drew, and Kelly Langton; Emily and Patrick Turnbull and Tony Tewes. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Anne (John) Olis and Mildred (Edward) Olis, many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was pre-deceased by his brothers Edward Olis, John Olis and his sisters Mary Ellen (Hank) Canestraight, Margaret Olis, and Josephine (Robert Kenneth) Reitzloff. The family would like to thank the services of Compassus Hospice, Nurse Ed and the personal caregivers Donna, Dave, DJ, and Mary for their overwhelming kindness and support. A visitation will be held on Friday, July 13th 4:00 – 7:00pm with a Prayer Service and Eulogy at 6:30pm at the Chas. Verheyden Funeral Home, 16300 Mack Ave., Grosse Pointe Park. A Memorial Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 14th at 11:30am and a Funeral Mass will follow at 12:00pm at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 467 Fairford Rd. Grosse Pointe Woods.
